For decades, Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley and its surrounding community have been a multi-cultural mecca for ideas and the arts. Today, a rich history of cultural activities continues along a street now filled with great cafes and more books than just about any other place in the country. Within this compact strip of neighborhoods and businesses, 20 bookstores house more than one million books, making the area, by one measure, "one of the best places for book browsing" in the world.

Telegraph Area Association in conjunction with the City of Berkeley and the University of California, has developed this guide to help make your visit enjoyable

The Best of Berkeley 2008 is the Daily Californian’s annual reader-voted contest to find the best people, places, and businesses in Berkeley. Naturally, Telegraph Avenue has more of these "Best" than any other area in Berkeley or the East Bay. This is another reason why people love to come to Telegraph Ave. From Moe's Books win for the Best Bookstore 2008 to Rasputin's for the Best Music Store 2008, Telegraph won most of the awards. Check it out and visit our great area.

Bookstores

The Telegraph Area is a rich browsing ground for readers of all ages and interests, with a number of bookstores including secondhand bookstores, specialty stores, and textbook stores. These stores provide a wide variety of books including quality paperbacks and imported books. An added feature in some bookstores is the in store public reading series. Authors such as Maya Angelou, Joseph Heller, and Ray Bradbury regularly read at Telegraph Ave. bookstores. In addition to the wide variety of books and paperbacks, there is also great flexibility in price, from secondhand to expensive rarities. With the largest and most diverse selection of books and bookstores in America contained in a few blocks, it is an attraction hard to miss!
